"It was definitely a trip of a lifetime. So worth it in every way. And having a lovely set of people to share the experience with made it extra special. So lovely to have a high spirit of adventure among us all. I can still hear the crashing waves and bleating of the sea lion pups in my head."

Galapagos Islands - SE

This trip is part of the Comfortable Hiking Holidays Adventure Collection.

There are very few spots left in the world that are untouched by human development and preserved in their natural form. The Galapagos Islands is one of them.

Located 1000km from mainland Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean, the archipelago is made up of 13 major islands and 7 smaller ones plus dozens of islets, all surrounding the equator. This is one of the most volcanically active regions in the world, and the islands emerged from the bottom of the sea in the form of astonishing volcanic upheavals. In 1978, UNESCO designated the Galapagos Islands as the first World Heritage Site. Most of the islands are remote with no human life. The number of visitors permitted into the Galapagos National Park per year is restricted, so there’s no mass tourism, big cruise ships or tacky souvenir shops.  Most days we’ll feel like we’re the only humans around.

The focus of our adventure is the nature around us and the abundant wildlife both above ground and underwater. The Galapagos is a wild landscape with some of the most unique wildlife on the planet; many of its animal species are found nowhere else in the world. You will be amazed by how we can get so close to giant tortoises, sea lions, iguanas, blue-footed boobies and Galapagos penguins, without threatening their territories. The animals here are unfazed; the lack of natural predators has left them fearless. They will allow you to walk around them taking paparazzi photos, and they will carry on with their daily lives as usual.

Our accommodations will be the Samba, a 78ft motor yacht (Tourist Superior Class) with seven twin-share cabins, all with private bathrooms, hot water and air conditioning. This means that the group size is limited to 14 guests. It is modern, impeccably clean and fully staffed, and wait until you get a taste of the great food our chef has in store for us!

We are an active bunch and this is an active action-packed holiday. Each day will feature the opportunity to hike (2 hour/light nature walks) – often among messes of iguanas and sea lion colonies, to kayak – exploring quiet coves and bays, spotting sea turtles and reef sharks, and to snorkel – with quite literally thousands of colourful fish, starfish and maybe even manta rays. Aboard ship, relax as we sail alongside pods of dolphins and at the end of the day, catch the sunset, cocktail in hand.

We have partnered with a top-notch local outfitter to offer you a trip like no other. This one is the Southeast (SE) option, visiting 10 islands in total and the oldest in the archipelago. Because they are older, they’ve had more time to develop vegetation and are greener than those to the west, which are rockier and more barren by comparison. Flora and fauna you can expect to see on the SE itinerary that you are unlikely to see on the NW include the waved albatross, dense colonies of land iguanas and the most impressive giant opuntia cactuses. There are also more opportunities for viewing sharks while snorkelling, as well as for spotting a greater variety of birdlife, more blue-footed boobies and more sea lion colonies.

This trip also include free time in Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz Island) - a perfect opportunity to visit the Charles Darwin Research Station. Darwin’s connection to the Galapagos is legendary and dates back to his original visit when he discovered several species of finches that varied from island to island, which helped him to develop his theory of natural selection. Years later, he consolidated all of his observations into his famous book On The Origin of Species, drastically and controversially altering the scientific view on the biological origins of life.

Each island is a little different but they all have one thing in common; beautiful landscapes and incredible wildlife. Expect this to be a trip of a lifetime; the Galapagos routinely exceed expectations, and you’ll gain a whole new appreciation for Mother Nature by the end of this tour!

Day 3

QUITO TO GALAPAGOS
HIGHLANDS & EL CHATO TORTOISE RESERVE

Day 4

PUERTO AYORA (Santa Cruz)
BOARD THE YACHT
This is a free day in Puerto Ayora and a perfect opportunity to visit the Charles Darwin Research Station. Regroup later in the day to board the yacht.

Day 5

FLOREANA
AM: PUNTA CORMORANT & CHAMPION
PM: POST OFFICE BAY & THE BARRONESS LOOKOUT
At Punta Cormorant, a flamingo lagoon can be found behind white and black mangroves, and the snorkeling around Champion is extraordinary - lots of fish, rays, sharks and the playfulness of the Galapagos sea lions.
Floreana is also home to Post Office Bay, where 18th-century whalers used a barrel as an unofficial mail drop. The custom continues to this day between Galapagos visitors!

Day 6

ESPANOLA
AM: PUNTA SUAREZ
PM: GARDNER BAY & GARDNER ISLAND
Espanola is the oldest of the islands, and the breeding site of nearly all of the world's 12,000 pairs of waved albatrosses. The trail to get there passes by a beach occupied by lots of sea lions and large and colorful Espanola Lava Lizards.
Gardner Island has one of the most beautiful white sand beaches in all of Galapagos and kayaking and snorkeling at Gardner Bay is spectacular!

Day 7

SAN CRISTOBAL
AM: KICKER ROCK
PM: PUNTA PITT
Kicker Rock is an outstanding volcanic feature with vertical walls of over 135m and great numbers of sea birds nesting and resting on it. Snorkeling can be amazing; we are likely to swim with Galapagos sharks, sea turtles, and eagle rays around the colorful drop off that is also full of fish.
Punta Pitt has a mind-blowing landscape and its protected cove offers a great chance to kayak. Disembarking onto the small beach, you're confronted by the strong stench and cacophony of barking sea lions; this is a bachelor colony. A steep gully leads up the cliff to a breeding ground for boobies of all three varieties - Red-footed, Blue-footed and Nazca. It’s the only place in the Galapagos where you can see all three species nesting together.

Day 8

SANTA FE & PLAZAS
AM: BARRINGTON BAY
PM: SOUTH PLAZA
Barrington Bay is one of the most picturesque inlets. The white sand on the seabed reflects the light to turn the calm waters turquoise. A small forest of gigantic prickly pear cactus grows on a peninsula that keeps the bay sheltered. All this are ideal conditions for a large sea lion colony.
On South Plaza, land iguanas wander through bright red carpet weed. This is one of the best spots in the archipelago to see land iguanas and swallow-tailed gulls. The sheer cliffs of the southern shore are a perfect bird habitat, making it an unparalleled bird observatory.

Day 9

CHINESE HAT & BARTOLOME
AM: CHINESE HAT
PM: BARTOLOME
Chinese Hat is named for its volcanic cone shape that also resembles, you guessed it, a Chinese style hat! The small channel of turquoise water provides a beautiful snorkeling site, where it is possible to see sharks, sea lions, penguins, and rays.
Bartolome Island offers an explosive volcanic landscape. Get ready to climb above 82m to admire the dramatic spatter cones and the view of Pinnacle Rock that is the iconic image of the Galapagos.

Day 10

RABIDA & JAMES
AM: JAMES BAY
PM: RABIDA
The shorelines of James Island are a combination of tuff cone, lava flows and sand. A rocky coast with a very gentle slope is used by a great number of shore birds and reptiles. Large lava tunnels, that are partially collapsed, house the Galapagos fur seals. The snorkeling here can be one of the best - sea turtles, parrot fishes, damsel fishes, white tipped reef sharks and more...
The island of Rabida has lava rich in iron and after millions of years of exposure to air they have turned red. The rusted volcanic material has eroded to form a beautiful crimson sand beach, lovely for a walk.

Day 11

NORTH SEYMOUR & DISEMBARKATION
FLIGHT TO QUITO
The visit to North Seymour is the best way of saying goodbye to the Galapagos. At sunrise, we will walk among the largest blue-footed booby colony on the Islands. Afterwards, we disembark from the yacht and go directly to the airport for the flight back to Quito.
